Why might my horse benefit from bodywork?
1
We believe that every horse benefits from bodywork! Remember Newton's Law of Inertia? Where a body in motion stays in motion until an outside force acts upon it? Imagine how much outside force is acting on your horse when landing from a jump or turning quickly around a barrel!
2
Stress reduction! Horses are prey animals. Their bodies are designed to react quickly. And oftentimes the conditions that we keep them in are not aligned with how feral horses were designed to live. Add to it the demands that we put on them both physically and mentally with our training and they could use a little "me time"! We can help calm your horse's nervous system and help them feel balanced and more at ease.
3
We always talk about the five senses, but have you heard of the term proprioception? Some might call it a sixth sense. It's the brain's ability to know where different parts of the body are in space. And a horse's proprioception can change when range of motion is interfered with. Massage therapy can help to alleviate trigger points in the musculature so that a joint can have a larger range of motion. Your horse's brain will re-learn the end range of motion for their hind leg in the stance phase if the tension in the hamstrings are relieved.
4
Injury Recovery: your horse had an injury and is now cleared by your veterinarian but they still seem a bit stiff. Sound familiar? Scar tissue that lays down after the injury can alter the way that the muscle fires. We can help encourage breakdown of the scar tissue. Also, your horse's body is covered in a connective tissue called fascia. Fascia essentially holds your horse together! When a muscle is injured, the fascia can form adhesions and fail to glide properly with movement. Myofascial release can restore the proper movement of your horse's fascia.
